This rural dwelling in the Southern Highlands on NSW is built to flexibly house multiple generations. Managing both water and bushfire on the site led to the integration of house and dam. The living areas and verandah dramatically hover directly over the water surface. Water is used to naturally cool the building, create beautiful reflected light and serene views out to the surrounding landscape. The dwelling is broken into a number of pavilions: one housing the primary living areas and bedroom, others housing separate utilitarian bedrooms for relatives and guests. Robust, durable, low maintenance and flame resistant materials such as concrete and sheet steel clad the exterior while softer, warmer materials such as Spotted Gum lining boards, locally made bricks and timber joinery line the interior.
